Village Gossip

Kevin Moyers

The Village Gossip has a bag of 64 questions...every visitor who comes past must answer a totally random selection of these, the first twenty pulled from the bag.

This week Kevin Moyers drops by – comics writer, actor, comedian and self-confessed son-of-a-bitch, samples of his recent work (including a couple of his stand-up sketches plus info on Scorn, his latest book from Septagon Studios) can be seen HERE

What are you working on at the moment?

Right now my main focus has been on writing a sketch comedy show. We will begin shooting soon. I am also working on a comic book that I think will get a lot of attention, both good and bad. I actually wrote it before Scorn, but I am rewriting it with David Hayes, who co-wrote issues 3 and 4 of Scorn. Believe me, it is going to shake some people up.

What is the best comic you've ever read?

That's tough to say. I would have to include strips on this one and say the Matt Groening Hell books are the most entertaining comics I've ever read.

Downloading illegal torrents will kill comics, discuss.

When this first started happening in music, I thought, "Who cares if people download illegally? I've dubbed countless tapes from friends." Haha. Tapes? Christ, I feel old. Anyway, once I got involved in entertainment, I realized how much work goes into anything artistic. People don't realize how hard it is to put a quality product together. Sure, everyone thinks that the millionaire movie makers will survive without their eight bucks, but what about the little guys? Look at how many people have lost their jobs during this WGA writer's strike. These people aren't even writers and don't get the big bucks. Look at the credits in a movie next time you watch one. There are dozens of names that you have never known. They are the people you hurt. Comics are the same way, but on a far smaller financial scale. Writers and artists make very little in comparison, especially on the indie level. In fact, we all still work day jobs. Stealing hurts us much worse.

Can you remember your first fan letter, either sent or received?

I can. I got one from a guy in England who was a fan of my stand-up comedy. We conversed a little via email and I sent him a black and white original printing of Scorn and he's now a fan of that. Nice guy. I always love feedback, good or bad, and I get plenty at the cons.

Do you like your own name?

That's an odd question. I don't dislike it. There's nothing special about it either. It doesn't pop like some crazy soap opera actor name, but it's also not Douche McTardface. People do misspell Moyers all the time, though.

What is your favorite movie?

Half Baked.

What are you most ashamed of having done?

I hope you mean in entertainment, because I'm not opening that closet full of skeletons. In entertainment, there's a bad short film out there with my name on it.

What was the last time you had a taste in your mouth that you couldn’t quite place?

Uh, what? You are officially starting to scare me. This question is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

What would you like written on your gravestone?

I will actually be cremated, and instructions are to place my remains on the set of as many movies as possible and credit me as "Guy in Urn."

What’s the best joke you know?

My favorite is "What do you tell a woman with two black eyes? Nothing, you already told her twice." Wrong, but funny.

What’s the best party youʼve ever been to?

When David Hayes turned 35, we had a roast for him. His mom roasted him and called him an asshole. Priceless!

What’s the most expensive luxury you’ve ever bought?

I guess my house.

What’s the strangest thing that’s ever arrived in the post for you?

I've never gotten anything weird, but I once mailed a rotten taco to a friend.

Which of the seven deadly sins do you indulge in most often: anger, sloth, gluttony, covetness, envy, pride or lust?

Lately it's been anger, but I find that's a good fuel for creativity.

Who was your first crush?

A girl in kindergarten.

Would you drop everything to travel through time with a complete stranger?

Only if he was driving a DeLorean. I time travel in style.

What is the most exciting thing happening in comics right now?

I would have to say the movie boom. Producers are picking up so many that it helps get attention, and the quality is so much better than it used to be. Some great flicks have been made.

What song means the most to you?

"Falling to Pieces" by Faith No More. That's what I feel like all the time.

What is your favorite soup?

French Onion.

If you weren't answering these silly questions, what would you be doing instead?

Maybe screwing around on the internet, as I often do.

If you'd like to drop by the Village to answer the Gossip's questions, email craigjohnsonesq@aol.com to chat. Similarly email if you have a question you'd like the Gossip to include in his bag.
