New Releases For 3/25/09
With the first week of spring comes some goodies for manga lovers. CMX premieres a new shojo that should be good for some tears from the girls (and some guys). Drawn and Quarterly brings an autobiographical tale from one of the founders of the Gekiga movement, and Vertical shows us again the crowning jewel of their line,
Black Jack. Even Udon, the newest kid on the block on the list this week has a new title that definitely worth checking out.

CHARLES TAN'S PICK:You can't go wrong with Tezuka's
Black Jack as we now enter the 4th volume...
JOHN THOMAS'S PICK:Vertical is releasing only one manga series this year, and it is one of the best you'll ever read.
Black Jack is a series you should already be reading.
JUSTIN COLUSSY-ESTES'S PICK:Yes,
Black Jack is a sure bet this week, but it's not the only thing, even if you only love the more esoteric or arty manga out there. The first volume of
Oishinbo was interesting, and held lots of promise for things to come--I'm excited to see this next volume because I'm hoping here is where we get the real feel for what to expect from this series. Also, D&Q releases the highly anticipated
A Drifting Life, which, if you've seen any of Tatsumi's earlier works, you should be very excited to see this autobiographical tale from the founding voice of Gekiga manga.
DAN POLLEY'S PICK:I've heard a bit about
A Drifting Life, and that's why it excites me this week. Sure, there's Tezuka stuff out there, and it's certainly worth getting, too.
LORI HENDERSON'S PICK:Yes,
Black Jack's amazing,
Oishinbo is intriguing, and
A Drifting Life will probably get lots of critical acclaim, but I'm gonna have to go with a manhwa pick this week.
Reading Club from Udon is a Korean girl's horror manga. I have to say I've enjoyed the horror written for girl's I've read, so this one really calls out to me.

"With San Diego Comic Con starting this week, publishers seem more interested in preparing for the con than releasing books, but the new big two of manga publishing still has titles coming out this week. Viz's selection is a potpourri of titles from Shonen Jump, Shonen Sunday and Signature lines. Yen Press' selection is just as varied with manga, manhwa and light novels, including Spice and Wolf vol 2.The List:VIZ MEDIADragon Ball Z Volume 8 GN (VIZB..."

"Eep! It's a short list again! But what's this? Another Kodansha volume in less than a year? The End really is near! Does this mean they might finish Akira before the 2012? No way! Netcomics makes a rare appearance with some print copies of their titles, if you like to read old school. And Vertical finally releases the much anticipated Peepo Choo, from one of the few Americans to get a series published in Japan. What will our reviewers choose? Scroll down to find out!..."

"Viz stands on top this week with their massive wave of shonen and shojo titles. But you can't deny the goodness of so many of them! One Piece is still awesome, even at volume 54, and Shaman King, an alumni from Shonen Jump, is getting soooo close to ending. But don't pass up Yen Press, Viz's biggest rival now, especially on the Top 10 best seller list! Pig Bride and Time and Again are two manhwa you must not miss! So what do we recommend? Scroll do..."

"Tokyopop makes a showing of their titles just as they start their "America's Greatest Otaku" tour at Anime Expo this week. CMX's second and last batch of times comes out right on the edge of the July 1 deadline. An Astroboy Omnibus from Dark Hourse sound intriguing and the price is very attractive. Udon releases another Apple Anthology, and is that a soft mewing I hear from Vertical? The List:CMXOrfina Volum..."

"Good variety of titles this week. CMX has it's swan song as the last four volumes we'll ever see from this publisher come out this week, including one debut title. Del Rey releases some more titles, including the second volume of Moyasimon, and the final omnibus edition of Samurai Deeper Kyo, a title that was originally published by Tokypop, before Kodansha took away their licenses. And speaking of Kodansha, they finally release volume 2 of Akira. 1-2 volumes a..."

"Wow, they're right when they say selection has dropped, but that doesn't mean the quality has! Bandai and Seven Seas has some novels out, and Yen Press has the next volume of Hero Tales, but the Big Dog this week is Viz with some great Sig titles, as well as the final Fushigi Yugi VIZBIG edition. It's kind of appropriate though, that Afterschool Charisma is coming out the week of Father's Day. Daddy!! (Get it to find out what that means.)..."

that's even a new title! Fairy Navigator Runa is a new magical girl

Hearts, but start a new series, a 4-koma about a cat in a ramen shop.

"The new releases list is getting smaller and smaller as more
companies go under, or worse, have the carpet pulled from under them.
That is what's happened to CMX, the manga imprint from DC. On Tuesday,
DC announced the imprint would stop printing as of July 1, 2010. This
was obviously a surprise to even the CMX crew, as the CMX website had
just been updated with new titles on Monday. But even that is gone now,
and we all mourn. In hap..."

"Small list, BIG releases! Tokyopop only has one title, but it's one that
the mangasphere has been excited about. Viz brings out some of it's
Signature and Shonen Sunday titles, with Biomega being the most
outrageous. Gotta love a talking bear with a hook-hand, and a machine
gun. Yen Press has a long list of good stuff, including a new Black
Butler, the debut of the new CLAMP series Kobato, and another debut of My Girlfriend is a
Geek. It..."

alternate weeks, it gives the pocketbook a bit of a break. The first
volume of Ratman, a superhero-inspired manga debuts this week. Fruits
Basket fans will want to check out Songs To Make You Smile from the same
creator. And Battle Vixens, aka Ikkitosen, finally finishes its run.

While a baseball manga might seem like a no-brainer in the US, sport titles in general haven't done well. Let's hope this one can break this no-hitter. And Seven Seas finishes their original manga based on Avalon: The Web of Magic series.CMX..."

"Yen Press gets to flood the list this week with some great titles such as Black Butler, Time and Again, and Bunny Drop, but Viz has some equally good titles this week. Dorohedoro is a weird yet enticing title. And three VizBIG editions are out, including the final volume of Rurouni Kenshin. This is one of those titles you need to read to hold a "manga otaku" title (IMHO), and there's no better way to read it then in the economica..."
