Manga Village Pick 'n' Mix

New Releases For 12/3/09

Beginning of the month means the beginning for the drop of the bank account.  There are lots of good titles this month from CMX, Del Rey and Viz, as well as BL.  But we also have to say goodbye to some as well.  Emma complete its run this week, as does BakeGyamon and Monkey High.  But with endings come new beginnings such as Night Head Genesis, Butterflies, Flowers, and the preparation for the One Piece warp speed up.  It's gonna be a hard month for the check book to get through unscathed!

Justin Colussy-Estes's Pick:
Go Go Monster. Go Go Monster. Go go get this monster of a volume because it's awesome-- I know because I have it in Japanese, I have no idea what the damn thing says, and yet I weep and gnash my teeth with joy and fury every time I look at it. Seriously though, I love everything I've ever seen by Matsumoto, creator of Tekkon Kinkreet, and this was on the top of my wish list of manga from him I wanted translated. Now if only somebody will tackle Ping Pong!

Amy Grocki's Pick:
My pick for this week are the yaoi bundles from Yaoi Press especially the Gothic Yaoi Bundle: The Works of Dany&Dany. It contains IDOL which is one of my all time Tfavs from Yaoi Press.

Alex Hoffman's Pick:
Justin and I are on the same wavelength, but I want to give special mention to Viz's new Shojo Beat series Butterflies, Flowers Vol. 1. The constantly shifting dynamic between the female lead and her main fling seems like a wonderful plot point that could be really interesting. Also, hurrah for more josei and a Shojo Beat title that has the parental advisory sticker. Would anyone like to get this for me for Christmas?

Matthew Rozier's Picks:
Oh man, I didn't realize that Butterflies, Flowers is josei. Gonna have to pick that one up sometime. Anyway, my picks this week are easy. My first pick is GoGo Monster. Taiyo Matsumoto is one of those manga artists who makes it very evident that he absolutely loves to draw. You can feel it just by looking at his art. Yeah, it's not crisp, clean, and consistent; but obviously Matsumoto doesn't care about all that stuff. He just puts his pen to the paper and draws. Tekkonkinkreet is one of my all-time favorites too, so picking this 450+ page single-volume series is a no-brainer. Not to mention Viz Media put a lot of care into this release. Kudos to them for putting together such a high-quality hardcover release. You should buy it just for the red-trimmed pages. There's even a design in the trim! Very, very cool.

My other pick is the final volume of Emma. Though the main story ended back in volume 7, the two volumes of side stories haven't been any less enjoyable. I am very much looking forward to the long-awaited wedding of William and Emma in volume 10. The only downside? This volume is bound to be a bittersweet one. If you haven't checked out Emma yet, you should definitely do so.

Dan Polley's Pick:
I will have to pick up the new volume of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It's a ferociously hilarious tale of a teacher and his students and there's always a punchline or laugh just a panel away. If you haven't tried it yet, what are you waiting for?

Lori Henderson's Pick:
Too much good stuff again this week!  Viz has some of it's best shonen and shojo out this week, with the likes of One Piece and Honey and Clover.  But my pick has to go to Monkey High Vol 8.  It's the final volume of this charming high school romance, and even though I'm going to miss it, I can't wait to see how it ends!

"Short list this week, though its better than last week's non-existent list. I hope everyone enjoyed our re-readable list. This week mostly features the smaller publishers. You can't really call Dark Horse small, but they keep their manga selection to a select few. Kodansha shouldn't be called small, but their releases have been disappointing and slow to say the least. With a company that has as large of a selection of titles as they do, you would expect to see something that..." [Read More]

"Alex Hoffman: Normally, the Manga Village crew goes over the list of newly released comics and give you our manga picks for the week. Since the releases for this week are a little... sparse, we've decided to talk about the series we love to re-read.One of the things I love about manga trade paperbacks is that you can re-read the series as long as it stays on your shelf...." "Bandai returns to the list this week after a few months hiatus with a new volume in the Code Geass universe. Digital manga has a couple of titles for the BL crowd, and Viz releases several titles from their Signature line, including the 2nd volume of Dorohedoro and 20th Century Boys which hits about the half-way mark. Yen Press has some good titles too, including two of their original titles, Gossip Girl and Maximum Ride. The List:..." [Read More]

"Tokyopop Rising! It's a good month again for the recovering manga publisher as they take the majority of the list. But even more, they bring back some titles that had been on hiatus for far too long, V. B. Rose and Your and My Secret just to name a few.Viz has some Shonen Sunday titles including a new Inu Yasha VizBIG and the second volume of Maoh Juvenile Remix. Fanfare returns with the much anticipated Korea As Viewed by 12 Creators, and Tokyopop pops in with a few titles. Wallets of the fans of Yubisaki Milk Tea beware. Viz says farewell to a few titles. "With San Diego Comic Con starting this week, publishers seem more interested in preparing for the con than releasing books, but the new big two of manga publishing still has titles coming out this week. Viz's selection is a potpourri of titles from Shonen Jump, Shonen Sunday and Signature lines. Yen Press' selection is just as varied with manga, manhwa and light novels, including Spice and Wolf vol 2.The List:VIZ MEDIADragon Ball Z Volume 8 GN (VIZB..." [Read More]

"Eep! It's a short list again! But what's this? Another Kodansha volume in less than a year? The End really is near! Does this mean they might finish Akira before the 2012? No way! Netcomics makes a rare appearance with some print copies of their titles, if you like to read old school. And Vertical finally releases the much anticipated Peepo Choo, from one of the few Americans to get a series published in Japan. What will our reviewers choose? Scroll down to find out!..." "Viz stands on top this week with their massive wave of shonen and shojo titles. But you can't deny the goodness of so many of them! One Piece is still awesome, even at volume 54, and Shaman King, an alumni from Shonen Jump, is getting soooo close to ending. But don't pass up Yen Press, Viz's biggest rival now, especially on the Top 10 best seller list! Pig Bride and Time and Again are two manhwa you must not miss! So what do we recommend? Scroll do..." "Tokyopop makes a showing of their titles just as they start their "America's Greatest Otaku" tour at Anime Expo this week. CMX's second and last batch of times comes out right on the edge of the July 1 deadline. An Astroboy Omnibus from Dark Hourse sound intriguing and the price is very attractive. "Good variety of titles this week. CMX has it's swan song as the last four volumes we'll ever see from this publisher come out this week, including one debut title. Del Rey releases some more titles, including the second volume of Moyasimon, and the final omnibus edition of Samurai Deeper Kyo, a title that was originally published by Tokypop, before Kodansha took away their licenses. And speaking of Kodansha, they finally release volume 2 of Akira. 1-2 volumes a..." [Read More]

"Wow, they're right when they say selection has dropped, but that doesn't mean the quality has! Bandai and Seven Seas has some novels out, and Yen Press has the next volume of Hero Tales, but the Big Dog this week is Viz with some great Sig titles, as well as the final Fushigi Yugi VIZBIG edition. It's kind of appropriate though, that Afterschool Charisma is coming out the week of Father's Day. Daddy!! (Get it to find out what that means.)..." [Read More]

Tokyopop says goodbye to a recent hit Alice in the Country of Hearts, but start a new series, a 4-koma about a cat in a ramen shop. It's not what you think. "The new releases list is getting smaller and smaller as more companies go under, or worse, have the carpet pulled from under them. That is what's happened to CMX, the manga imprint from DC. On Tuesday, DC announced the imprint would stop printing as of July 1, 2010. This was obviously a surprise to even the CMX crew, as the CMX website had just been updated with new titles on Monday. But even that is gone now, and we all mourn. In hap..." [Read More]

"Small list, BIG releases! Tokyopop only has one title, but it's one that the mangasphere has been excited about. Viz brings out some of it's Signature and Shonen Sunday titles, with Biomega being the most outrageous. Gotta love a talking bear with a hook-hand, and a machine gun.
