Death Note Volume 2 (Story by Tsugumi Ohba, Art by Takeshi Obata)

Viz Media

Death Note Volume

Genre Thriller
Age Rating
For Older Teens
Price
$7.99

Light thinks he's put an end to his troubles with the FBI--by using the Death Note to kill off the FBI agents working the case in Japan! But one of the agents has a fiancée who used to work in the Bureau, and now she's uncovered information that could lead to Light's capture. To make matters worse, L has emerged from the shadows to work directly with the task force headed by Light's father. With people pursuing him from every direction, will Light get caught in the conflux?

This volume of Death Note, in my opinion, showcases the true potential of the series. The introduction was done in the previous volume and with that out of the way, this is the actual meat. There are several exciting moments that occur and keep the reader's heart racing. We get to witness how smart Light truly is and what counter measures L takes. Moreover, if there was any question as to the morality of Light, this volume draws the line clearly.

As can be expected from the artist, there's lots of gorgeous and detailed art that can be found here. One of the flaws as far as art goes however is that Death Note is one of those comics that has much exposition and dialogue and usually fills half of the panels.

As far as plot goes, we begin full of excitement and end at a point where there's some sense of closure yet keeps readers eager to know what happens next. Another point worth mentioning is that astute readers will notice how the Shinigami Ryuk is used as a plot device for Light to explain his machinations, in the same way that Watson is present in the Sherlock Holmes stories. There are several scenes which aren't really believable (such as Light being too cautious) but the manga is so engrossing that it's forgivable.  There's not lots of bonuses in the second volume of Death Note but it's one of the more titles out there.

Summing Up:

Jumping straight into the action, this is one of the best volumes of Death Note out there.

I must agree, Charles. Where some volumes are stronger than others, this is a great follow-up to a compelling first volume.
