Gyo Volume 2 (Junji Ito)

Viz Media

Gyo Volume

Genre Horror
Age Rating
Mature
Price
$9.99

Trapped on an island filled with the stench of mutating bodies, can teenager Tadashi save his girlfriend from a fate worse than death? Or will the cure prove worse than the disease? Hold your breath until all is revealed--along with the final stinking secrets of the "walking fish of Okinawa"!

This second volume concludes the Gyo series and then adds some. The first chapter takes place a month after the last volume and our protagonist awakes to a very different world. Suffice to say, Ito manages to make the transition between one kind of horror to another.

As usual, his art is detailed and bizarre and there are a lot of interesting elements that Ito throws into his stories. The horror element here is further expanded instead of the science fiction which isn't necessarily a bad thing. My only complaint is that the manga ends the story arc on an open-ended note and fans who want some final closure will be disappointed.

This volume also includes two shorts from Ito, one story is very brief and bizarre one while the second is more up to par with Ito's typical style of horror. Overall this isn't a bad purchase, especially if you're looking to complete your collection. While the previous volume was full of potential, the actual ending of Gyo was a bit disappointing.  Although, I'd like to think the other elements, and the last short story, still makes this worthwhile.

Summing Up:

Could have ended better but the manga has other redeeming qualities.

Although I liked the first volume of Gyo more than the second, I think your rating is a on a "body of work" scale rather than Gyo 2 compared to most books out there. I would rather read Gyo 2 daily (and go absolutely insane) than read most of the manga that comes out.
