A young woman returning to her home town for revenge...
Seeing as this is only the second comic I’ve ever read, I don’t know whether it’s just me, or whether there’s a trend towards putting a rather dark image on the front cover of comics to deliberately heighten the brooding dark tone in your mind before you’ve even opened it.
The difference in the artwork, both in quality and tone, between what’s on the front and what’s inside is bewildering to a newcomer and had I not been specifically asked to read this, there’s no way I would have picked it up. So, after the initial sigh of relief that the first page didn’t have blood sucking vampires or depictions of the burning gates of hell, the artwork was a pleasant surprise and the text lulled me into thinking this might be quite an interesting story.
The initial introduction to the setting and then in turn the main character was thoughtfully done and by page five, I was almost enjoying myself. There are dark flashbacks which give clues as to what’s to come, but they’re cleverly done and add to the strong continuity of the plot as it unfolds.
The jagged heavy lines of the artwork are subdued by subtle colour. There are some real stand out moments graphically and colour is used to great effect throughout.
