Septic Isle (Andy Winter/Mick Trimble)
Moonface Press
His life falling to pieces, hero agent Jacob Marley returns to MI5 to take on a group of Neo-Nazi lunatics.
Andy Winter continues his writing career with this spy thriller that tackles rascism and islamaphobia in a post 7/7 Britain. Winter has clearly got more ambitious as he's got more experienced and confident, and Septic Isle is a lot more serious than his previous works. Fortunately, Winter has the skill as a writer to tackle these heavier issues and does so with stylish writing and believable dialogue.
The plotline is kind of James Bond mixed with Spooks, so plenty of brutality and terrorism, mixed with whimsy and one-liners. The writer and artist are clearly having a lot of fun with the genre.
That said, I must admit I'm not too keen on the artwork on Septic Isle. Trimble is good as far as it goes, but, lacks the polish that the writing really deserves. There are distinct moments where I felt the time hadn't been put in to really finish off the look and perfect it.
Still...the book is a good quality page turner, nevertheless. I really enjoyed reading it and I think Septic Isle is definately one I can recommend, particularly if you are a fan of spy novels/films etc.
I've become convinced that Andy Winter is now amongst the finest of British Writers about. Now he needs an artist who can really showcase his clever, witty, inspired writing talents.

Summing Up:
Gripping, but brutal stuff. Worthwhile spy thriller.
