Dick Turpin and the Restless Dead (Steve Tanner and Andrew Dodd)

Time Bomb Comics

Dick Turpin and the Restless Dead

Dick Turpin and Tom King, the gentleman thief run into a village of zombies in the middle of Epping Forest.

So...Highwaymen and the undead. Is it a good idea? Does it breathe new life into the zombie and/or highwayman genres or is it a fusion too far? I must admit...I'm not sure. In one respect, it seems almost formulaic to juxtapose 2 seemingly mismatched genres but on the other hand I happen to like comics about highwaymen and I like comics about the undead.

So...the proof is in the reading, and surprisingly, it reads pretty well. The artist is good, at times brilliant, but doesn't quite have the consistency needed to feel totally professional. Many panels worked really well and there is a clear flair for the dramatic here, although, a few are a bit weaker. It feels like they should have spent a little more time on a couple of specific panels. Being honest with himself, the artist probably already knows which ones I mean.

There’s a wide range of unusual or difficult to draw subjects being drawn, though, and the artist handles it all with skill so much credit should be given for that.

Apart from the consistency issue and occasional weak panel, the artist clearly has the talent and should grow in skill as he does more. His skills will grow, as long as more perfectionism is applied.
The story starts fairly normally for a highwayman tale, with a stagecoach being robbed. It's a reasonable start and it does drift more seamlessly than I expected into the zombie action, although it feels like it should return in some way to the stagecoach part of the plot - it feels like a set up that hasn't really gone anywhere.

The zombie stuff is straightforward enough, and works pretty well, although doesn't get particularly scary. In fact, the zombies seem to be dealt with pretty easily, to be honest.

Nothing in the dialogue annoys too much or jars with the reader, particularly. The writer doesn't get overly carried away with himself, and, most importantly, doesn't overdo the "epic" lines or "witty" one-liners. As a result it all works pretty well.

So, overall the comic is fine. It's not quite a work of genius but at the same time it's well above average. I'd have no problem recommending the comic to anyone and am quite interested to see what works the creative team come out with as grow in skill and talent.

Summing Up:

Shows talent and much promise. Not quite there yet, but it will come for these two.
