Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei Volume 1 (Koji Kumeta)

Del Rey Manga

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei Volume

Genre: Humor

Rating: Older Teen (16+)

Price: $10.99

In this new Del Rey series, the main character is a high school teacher who, frankly, has a bit of a problem finding happiness in life. Because of that, he seeks to hang himself in the opening sequence.

Unfortunately for him, a high school girl happens by and manages to save him from death. But when they converse, the teacher realizes the girl is a bit, well, kooky.

The rest of the volume follows this formula: Super-negative teacher is thrust into a situation about a kid from school and that chapter goes on to show how that student relates to the teacher as well as express the student's unique personality trait. The students includes the stalker, the shut-in, the obsessive-compulsive and many more.

The humor is the best thing about this new series. It's a very dry sense of humor at times and is often very subtle, which is quite an enjoyment. In addition, the art is simple with thin lines, making for a distinct visual aesthetic. The visual style also helps to make each student readily identifiable.

Really, this volume is just a series of vignettes designed to help set up the students-teacher dynamic and to introduce everyone's personality quirks. Hopefully the next volume will be just as humorous, but will expound on the narrative a bit.

Summing Up:

The humor alone makes this a title to look forward to. Unfortunately, the plot in this volume is a bit too rigid.
