Gakuen Prince Volume 1 (Jun Yuzuki)

Del Rey Manga

Gakuen Prince Volume

Genre: Romance, Drama

Rating: Older Teen (16+)

Price: $10.99

Jyoshika Gakuen Private High School, as the name suggests, is an elite school. And when a new student, the hunky Mizutani, joins the school, it turns out to be a bit more peculiar than he orginially thought.

The first interesting note about the school is that it is predominately attended by girls. On Mizutani's first day, he is surprised to find that even the student president is a girl.

But he is baffled when a young boy is cowering in the corner, crying and with his shirt ripped. It's just behavior that he doesn't understand.

And when he makes his way to class, he is introduced to even more odd behavior. When a fellow classmate tries to take him under his wing, Mizutani reacts with bewilderment. The sexual activity of the girls in the school is off the charts, and without a girlfriend, Mizutani will be their main target.

So when he runs into an unsuspecting girl in a lower class -- despite having pranks continually pulled on her, she prays that she will remain anonymous in the school -- he sets into motion a change that will affect both their lives at the school.

After facing some difficulties, Mizutani is shown how his actions are affecting others. Only then does he see how he has been selfish.

The two main characters, despite being cliched at the beginning, really begin to grow and expand past those borders as the volume heads on. And that is quite refreshing and sets a good tone for the series.

And although the main character feels like it should be Mizutani, the volume seems more exciting during the passages when it is focusing on the girl he has dragged into his life. And the plot is paced surprisingly well; I figured how it ended would have been in an upcoming volume. Since it is in the first, the series should be able to expand its tale quicker.

7.5

Summing Up:

What seems like a cliche beginning turns out to be a promising entry for this new series.
