Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Volume 2 (Mahiro Maeda)
Del Rey Manga
Genre: Drama
Rating: Older Teen (16+)
Price: $10.99
The count is back. And his plans are in motion and could upset the balance of the lives of a number of people in his social circle -- but that's exactly what he wants.
His henchmen are talking in the beginning about the count's impeccable timing, and they proceed to explain a series of events that were on the preceding pages.
The count, however, receives a visitor, one he apparently has been expecting. And his visitor receives counseling from the count, who also offers a present to help solve the problems the visitor is angry at. Yet when the visitor tries to solve those problems, it backfires, and deeds quickly unravel.
But in order to keep the plans going, the visitor allies with someone, and the two set out to see those plans through. But the plans go terribly awry when something unexpected happens.
For the count, however, things are going nicely. His first victim and the victim's family is quickly seeing the results of his schemes. Those long-term schemes might take quite a while to unfold, but they do so according to the count's wishes.
The count's victim has taken drastic action, but now it looks as if that action has been undone. And that shocks him and the rest of his family, who are mingling about at a socialite party.
The victim must endure the effects of that drastic action, even though they start to slowly unravel the binds between him and his family. The victim finds himself in an untenable position, which is just what the count wants.
Gankutsuou is quickly becoming a must-read series. The drama is the focal point of volume two, with the count's underpinnings propelling the story ahead.
8.5
Summing Up:
The drama takes the reins of this volume, and it makes it all that much better. The third should be just as great.
