Dusk (David Doub/Maki Naro/Jerry Gonzales)

Dusk

Follows and flashbacks the life of Eve, an unlikely vampire hunter, who has become addicted to her life in the service of the vampire, Lord Ash.

Quite a dark and dramatic action comic with generally good writing and dialogue. It is sometimes a bit verbose and text heavy, seemingly unwilling to let the pictures tell the story. That's a shame because the artwork is generally fantastic.

It comprises of stunning black and white visuals which have a hint of manga, but a mainly westernised sensitivity. They are accessible and cartoonish, but at the same time, the heavy inkwork and black and white contrasts provide a lot of atmosphere. This is a good balance and ideal for a comic of this type. Accessible enough looking to draw people in but dark and moody enough to tell the story and provide drama.

There is plenty of drama in the story to convey. I loved the husband and wife scenes at the end of the first chapter, which had a kind of romantic tragic beauty to them and pulled on the heart strings just the right amount.

But sometimes it really does seem as though Doub does not trust the audience to interpret what is happening...sometimes things which don't need to be are spelled out and themes and messages are rammed home frequently.

That said, it seems a minor point. It's an early work for this writer and we can forgive some issues with pacing and overwriting because of the enthralling plot and frequent moments of brilliance.

Summing Up:

Oververbose, but beautiful looking and gripping work.
